For three weeks, Team Visma, led by captain Vingeggard, tried in vain to isolate and distance UAE Team Emirates and its leader, Pogacar. Then, on the very last stage, with a completely new route instead of the traditional sprint finish on the Champs-Élysées, the Visma duo of Jorgenson and van Aert finally pulled off this tactical feat. A visibly shaken Pogacar had nothing left to counter van Aert’s furious final attack on the third ascent of Montmartre [53]. And this despite him blasting up the climb at a phenomenal 30 km/h! What was again striking was that RBH once more left their raw talent, Lipowitz, largely unsupported on the final stage. This was an enormous risk, despite the early timing for the GC 50 km from the finish, and even after that, an escort would have been more than appropriate. It is quite astonishing that RBH also finished third in the team standings, given all the chaos they caused behind and in front of the scenes.
Pogacar’s dominance was certainly also due to his completely different preparation compared to previous years, which obviously managed his potential optimally and conserved his resources more effectively throughout the season. “The Slovenian completed a packed racing program in the spring this year. After the UAE Tour, he competed in Strade Bianche, Milan-San Remo, the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, and the Ardennes Classics. He won four of the seven one-day races; his worst result was third place at Milan-San Remo. After a break from racing, he won the Critérium du Dauphiné and the Tour de France for the fourth time. For the third part of the season, Pogacar will concentrate on the World Championships in Kigali and the Tour of Lombardy [55].” The vast majority of the riders who started in Lille actually survived this three-week onslaught all the way to Paris [56]. And so the fastest tour of all time, over 3302 kilometers in length with 51,550 meters of elevation gain, comes to an end at an average speed of 42.849 km/h [57]. The expert is amazed, the layman is astonished!
Furor Circensis [58] as in ancient Rome, nothing has changed since then and the majority of humanity does not even notice it, after all, we are beyond the Age of Enlightenment, yet sapere aude in the Kantian sense is more urgently needed today than ever!

The author studied chemistry and sports science, worked at the Institute for Biochemistry and Doping Analysis at the German Sport University Cologne, was a founding member of the NADA DKS Commission (National Anti-Doping Agency, Doping Control System), co-authored the book “Doping in Cycling,” and worked as a lecturer in sports medicine training and as a course instructor in coach education. For decades, he coached up-and-coming athletes in performance centers, supported professional cycling in various capacities, and continues to be an active cyclist himself.
