In the course of this stage, the Tour disaster for Team RBH begins with the fall of Roglic’s noble helper Vlasov. At around 60km/h, Vlasov accidentally crashes into a ditch [22], sustains serious injuries and has to give up the race after the stage [23]. This means Roglic loses the most important domestique for the high mountain stages, a bitter setback for his GC ambitions.
The sub-segment analyzes during the stage once again leave you speechless when it comes to the performance indicators completed. The entire stage is raced at an hourly average of 46km/h [24], mind you on gravel bike material with significantly higher rolling resistance than the high-tech road cars otherwise used and 17 profiled gravel sections, where the racers had to climb the slopes on foot. Even on the rough gravel roads, the peloton travels at almost 40km/h.
There are two additional curiosities on the sidelines of the stage that require special attention. On the one hand, the astonishing performance of the breakaway king Jonas Abrahamsen, who circled tirelessly in front of the peloton and took over both the dotted jersey of the leader in the mountain classification and the green jersey of the leader in the sprint classification in the first third of the tour. The man not only astonishes with this achievement, but also his morphological history from a slight ectomorphic leptosome to an athletic body type, with a weight gain of 20kg (sic!), reduces all basic knowledge of ecotrophology to absurdity [25]. Even pharmacologically trained bodybuilders command the highest respect for this abnormal increase in obviously performance-enhancing and high-quality muscle mass.
The Belgian Victor Campenaerts delivers another urological artistic feat in the finale of the stage. At a speed of 48 km/h, Campenaerts releases his kidney filtrate into the previously emptied drinking bottle and thus maintains his assistant position in front of his sprint captain Arnaud de Lie [26]. He then disposes of the urine sample properly in the ditch, thereby also removing it from the reach of the doping controllers.
